Said The Whale Release Lead Single “Step Into The Darkness”

Following the announcement of their fifth studio album, Vancouver’s Said The Whale has released lead single “Step Into The Darkness” today with NYLON.

As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide, out on March 31 via Hidden Pony Records, was recorded during a time of significant change. Previously operating as a five-piece, the current trio – made up of frontmen Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester and keyboardist Jaycelyn Brown – entered the studio with no preconceptions and no concrete plan. With the help of We Are The City’s Cayne McKenzie on production duties, the finished product is Said The Whale’s most collaborative, focused album to date. Previous records highlighted the contrast between the two founders’ eclectic rock influences and salt-of-the-earth folksiness. Here, their styles become one.

SAID THE WHALE ANNOUNCE FIFTH FULL-LENGTH LP FOR RELEASE ON MARCH 31, 2017

SELECT CANADIAN DATES ANNOUNCED NEW SINGLE OUT IN JANUARY 2017

Long before Vancouver’s Said The Whale became a JUNO Award-winning, radio chart-topping indie rock band, it was an exploratory songwriting experiment led by high school friends Tyler Bancroft and Ben Worcester. Now, a decade since their 2007 formation, they have taken the project back to its freeform roots while simultaneously venturing forward into uncharted art-pop territory.

As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide, the band’s fifth studio album, marks a return to the group’s formative philosophies. Set for release on March 31, 2017 via Hidden Pony RecordsSaid The Whale recorded their latest batch of songs in various Vancouver studios, with We Are The City’s Cayne McKenzie serving as producer; helping to reconfigure song textures, soaking scratch vocals in effects and stitching back together song fragments into completed tracks. The sessions were briefly interrupted by the birth of Tyler’s son, and Jaycelyn, newly married, had to record some of her parts while on her extended honeymoon in Southeast Asia.

SAMO_12_JACKET_NEW“(As Long As Your Eyes Are Wide) is a return to how Tyler and I used to make music,” notes Ben, “which is just experimenting with anything and everything. We started out using Casio keyboards and drumbeats on our computers, and then we turned into a rock band. This is a return to being free to make anything.” [Read more…]

EX-IMAGINARY CITIES, MARTI SARBIT INTRODUCES NEW PROJECT “LANIKAI”. DEBUT ALBUM OUT NOVEMBER 18

itunes-cover-3000-x-3000

LANIKAI, like the Hawaiian beach they take their name from, mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and a swaggering ‘60s soul groove. With one foot in the past and one in the present—one on the shore and one in the sea, they make beautiful and poignant pop music.

The self-titled new album is set for a November 18 release via Hidden Pony Records. The record features Sarbit penned tunes, blended with a number of close musical confidantes. It also features the production handy work and accompaniment from her musical partner in Imaginary Cities, Rusty Matyas and Thomas D’Arcy. The album is introduced by the sonic and soaring lead track and accompanying lyric video for, I’m Glad, which is premiering at Exclaim.ca (link) today.

“I started writing I’m Glad after witnessing an awful altercation on the city bus. The song actually started off in a very sad, exhausted tone,” notes Marti. “In the middle of writing it, Rusty sent me a newly written song (by Slow Leaves) with a gorgeous, uplifting sentiment about humanity and, from that sudden perk, I’m Glad was flipped around.”

Pre-ordering the album now via Itunes/Apple Music, nets listeners I’m Glad as an instant grat track. [Read more…]
