LANIKAI, like the Hawaiian beach they take their name from, mix the serene and the stormy, pulling together lush, sparkling alt-pop vibes and a swaggering ‘60s soul groove. With one foot in the past and one in the present—one on the shore and one in the sea, they make beautiful and poignant pop music.

The self-titled new album is set for a November 18 release via Hidden Pony Records. The record features Sarbit penned tunes, blended with a number of close musical confidantes. It also features the production handy work and accompaniment from her musical partner in Imaginary Cities, Rusty Matyas and Thomas D’Arcy. The album is introduced by the sonic and soaring lead track and accompanying lyric video for, I’m Glad, which is premiering at Exclaim.ca (link) today.

“I started writing I’m Glad after witnessing an awful altercation on the city bus. The song actually started off in a very sad, exhausted tone,” notes Marti. “In the middle of writing it, Rusty sent me a newly written song (by Slow Leaves) with a gorgeous, uplifting sentiment about humanity and, from that sudden perk, I’m Glad was flipped around.”

Pre-ordering the album now via Itunes/Apple Music, nets listeners I’m Glad as an instant grat track. [Read more…]

Imaginary Cities to release new EP “Leftovers” on August 12 / Marti Sarbit Announces Her New Project, Lanikai, for release this fall

Rusty Matyas and Marti Sarbit of Imaginary Cities are releasing a few more songs as a ‘thank you’ to fans and friends as they embark on new projects and put their work together in Imaginary Cities on hiatus for the foreseeable future. Called Leftovers, the four track EP is being released on August 12 on the band’s long time Canadian label, Hidden Pony Records (Canada) and on Votiv Records (in the U.S.). The songs were pulled from unused selections for 2013’s Fall Of Romance, but they seem to capture the band in perhaps, the best time of writing and creating together: the instantly ear-catching, sing-along harmonies and timeless pop-blues inspired song writing and production, in full effect.

Temporary Resident was the band’s debut in 2011 and the duo earned immediate praise from Paste who claimed the band: “The Best Of What’s Next”, InterviewExclaim. The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, The National Post and more. The band topped the campus radio charts in Canada before their album was even released. Imaginary Cities won a Western Canada Music Award for Best Pop Album of the Year and were long-listed for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize. They went on to tour in Canada and the U.S. with The Pixies in April of that same year. [Read more…]
